Suffering Love

As Believers we are called to “rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Rom 12:15, ESV). It is easy for us to celebrate with those who are joyful, jealousy and envy aside. But to sympathetically mourn with those who are suffering is to slow down and show love. This suffering love is a testimony to the world that we are who we say we are—imitators of Jesus. Christ said to his followers, “Buy this all people will know that you’re my disciples, if you have a love for one another” (Jn 13:35, ESV). This commandment to love is saturated in suffering. Just prior to this pericope Jesus talks to his disciples about betrayal. Following He foretells He will be denied. Clearly, we are to love as He loved, which is to suffer with those who suffer.

Perhaps Socrates was right: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
